Pharr is located in the Rio Grande Valley and right on the border of Mexico. It is sub-tropical so the weather turns out being something like what we used to here in Ontario in the summer - warm and reasonably humid (especially compared to Arizona). It is also breezy most days and this takes some getting used to.
The Tip O Texas is the RV park where I spent the first three months of 2009. This is an older park with great facilities and reasonable prices. The property is very well maintained. Winter fees run just under $500 a month for an RV of my size and that's a bargain. There is plenty of entertainment, wonderful resort amenities and nice people.
It wasn't too many years ago that RVers you needed an advance reservation for the Tip, but that's not the case now. Especially this year. Blame it on the economy. A lot of people didn't travel, and if they didn't do it this year, it will be interesting to see what next year brings. For those who are interested, there are about 500 RV parks in the Valley. Competition is keen.
I'm asking myself; when a lot of the older folks that currently live in many of these winter parks pass away or just simply stop traveling who will replace them? What will the parks look like ten years from now? There is no way to see the future, so for now I'm content to enjoy what they have to offer.
This part of Texas is pretty laid back, there is a superb highway system around the Valley and Pharr has an International Airport. Retail and other facilities (like medical) are as good as you get anywhere. A lot of Winter Texans take advantage of being right on the border and have their dental work done in Progresso, Mexico when they're in the Valley. There are plenty of dentists, service and facilities are excellent and prices are what attract customers.
I've posted a few more pictures from Tip O Texas including ones of their woodshop. This would be reason enough for a lot of people to be attracted to this park.
